Do SSO/MSC personnel have the option of learning to pilot helicopters?

SSOs and SSOP midshipmen do have the option to transfer to an active-duty designation, including aviation.

Is safety a concern for SSO/MSC personnel? Active duty?

Are there other obligations other than the 2 weeks per year of training?

The greatest safety concern, as with any ship-board work, is avoiding injuries and damage onboard a vessel. It is a very industrial environment with many kinds of equipment and cargo-related hazards. Safety will be one of the primary areas of focus in your training.

And yes you do have the option to pursue an active-duty (not reservist) commission. MIDN Christofk is going to be a Naval Aviator and I'm going to be a Surface Warfare Officer.

As an SSO, your only obligation other than the 2 weeks, is to maintain your physical fitness and maintain your USCG license.

In other words, don't get fat and get a job on a ship. :)
